The rise of AI-powered development platforms has democratized app creation like never before. Platforms like Lovable, Bolt, Base44, Replit, and V0 have made it possible for anyone to build functional web applications in minutes. But our recent comprehensive security research has uncovered a troubling reality: nearly half of these AI-generated apps are inadvertently exposing sensitive user data to the public internet.

The Research: A Deep Dive into AI App Security

We conducted an extensive security analysis of applications built across five major AI development platforms: Lovable, Bolt, Base44, Replit, and V0. Our focus was specifically on one of the most critical yet overlooked security vulnerabilities: unintentionally public databases that leak sensitive information.

The methodology was straightforward but thorough. We examined thousands of applications across these platforms, testing for database exposure, data accessibility, and permission controls. What we discovered was both alarming and eye-opening.

The Shocking Results

Our findings paint a concerning picture of the current state of AI-generated app security:

40%+ Data Leakage Rate

More than 40% of applications we tested across all platforms contained some level of sensitive data exposure. This means that nearly half of all AI-generated apps we examined were unintentionally sharing private information with the public internet.

The types of sensitive data we discovered being leaked include:

  • Personal Identifiable Information (PII): Full names, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses
  • Financial data: Transaction records, payment information, and billing details
  • Private communications: User messages, chat logs, and personal conversations
  • Authentication data: Password hashes and security credentials

Critical Write Access Vulnerabilities

Perhaps even more alarming, approximately 20% of applications allowed completely unrestricted access to their databases. This means anonymous users could:

  • Create new records
  • Edit existing data
  • Delete information entirely
  • Potentially corrupt or destroy entire datasets

Universal Problem Across Platforms

This isn't a problem isolated to one or two platforms. We discovered vulnerable applications with sensitive data leaks on every single platform we investigated. The issue appears to be systemic rather than platform-specific.

The root cause is clear: these platforms don't implement "secure by default" configurations and fail to encourage builders to address insecure defaults. Instead, they prioritize ease of use and rapid deployment over data protection, leaving security as an afterthought that most users never consider.

The Root of the Problem: A Real-World Example

To understand how easily these vulnerabilities occur, let's walk through a typical scenario. Imagine you want to create a gym booking system. You go to your favorite vibe-coding platform and enter this simple prompt:

"Implement a website for my gym that allows users to see the list of classes and times and book a class. It should also allow me to see and control the classes and bookings in an admin panel."

Within minutes, it generates a beautiful, functional application complete with:

  • A user-friendly class booking interface
  • An admin panel for managing classes and bookings
  • Database tables for "classes" and "bookings"
  • Automatic collection of user information including full names, email addresses, and phone numbers

Here's the problem: By default, both the "classes" and "bookings" tables are publicly accessible for both reading and writing. This means anyone with your app's URL can:

  • View all booking data, including personal information of your gym members
  • See who's attending which classes and when
  • Access email addresses and phone numbers of all users
  • Create fake bookings or delete legitimate ones
  • Potentially crash your system by flooding it with data

Most critically, at no point does the platform warn you about these security implications. There's no indication that sensitive personal information is being collected and stored in a publicly accessible database. No warnings about data protection, no guidance on implementing proper access controls.

The Dangerous Fix Cycle

Here's where the problem gets even worse. When attempting to fix the security issue by enabling Row Level Security (RLS) settings to restrict database access, in many cases the application immediately breaks. The AI-generated code isn't designed to work with proper security controls.

When asking the AI agent to fix the broken functionality, the platform's response is alarming: in many cases it simply removed my RLS restrictions and reopened the data to the world – without any warning that this was dangerous or explaining the security implications. The AI prioritized making the app "work" over keeping the data secure, effectively undoing my security improvements.

This creates a vicious cycle where:

  1. Apps are built with insecure defaults
  2. Developers who try to secure their apps find they break
  3. AI agents "fix" the issue by removing security measures
  4. The cycle continues with no education about the trade-offs being made

This example illustrates the core issue: AI development platforms excel at creating functional, visually appealing applications quickly, but they often prioritize speed and functionality over security best practices. Common issues we identified include:

  • Default database configurations that prioritize accessibility over security
  • Insufficient guidance on proper permission settings
  • Limited security education for non-technical builders
  • Inadequate testing of security configurations in generated code
  • No warnings or notifications about sensitive data collection
  • Absence of security considerations in the development workflow

  • Provide better security education and documentation
  • Build security testing into their development workflows
  • Make security guidance more prominent in their interfaces
